spinning the walnut-dyed polwarth

Here is a link to the polwarth roving I dyed last October with walnuts gathered from the neighborhood park.  So far I've spun about 2/3 of the braids into fingering weight; 3-ply yarn.

I estimate over 1200 yards at this point.  The best is yet to be spun ... that beautiful deep nutty brown.

The finished yarn has such a lovely halo.  Natural dyes give their own special lustre.  In certain light there are olive shimmers (perhaps from the leaves I tossed into some of the dye baths.)

Here are some pictures of the deeper medium yarn...

All sorts of patterns have been going through my mind.  With about 1800 yards once it is all spun, I keep coming back to a circular, lace table topper for the small round table I inherited from my Aunt Jean.  Perhaps a girasole or a heliotaxis pi.

The past few days I've spent way too much time looking at stitching blogs for some crazy quilting ideas.  I'm overwhelmed by the beauty of this artform.  Here are a few:  Wind from the East, Maureen's Vintage Acquisitions, Ivory Blush Roses.  It's been years since I've stitched and I may have to work up a small piece just to see if there is an aptitude left.

Beautiful stuff. I love natural dyes. The colors just can't be beat by synthetic dyes.

Your spinning always impresses me! And I think it is very cool that you dyed it with walnuts.

There was a walnut tree on my way to the bus stop when I was little. I would pick up the walnuts and my hands got so messy!
