contentment

A friend gave me a special gift Friday afternoon.  It was a copy of One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp.  I've been reading it slowly, a bit each night, to let the Scriptural thoughts settle and sink into my heart.

Like the author, I struggle with the habit of discontentment.  So like the author, I've started a journal list of gifts God continually bestows.  It's such a practical way of learning to give thanks in all things and at all times.  Already I recognize my thoughts and prayers changing.

This is a much better way of making each day count.

My current computer background ~ a precious picture of our grandson with his aunt taken over Christmas in Arizona

12.  my husband's flannel shirt on the bedpost
13.  a bottle with clean, fresh water at bedside
14.  the gentle weight and warmth of a quilt

... and so my list grows and my heart grows in contentment.

I too like the idea of working on being conscious of all the good that has been given to us. Being grateful is a good habit to acquire.

Our previous pastor once included something like that in a sermon. He said if he woke up in the middle of the night, instead of getting upset that he was awake, he'd lie there and pray. He'd thank God for the bed he had, that his heat was on, etc.

The things on your list warm my heart and make me smile. We should all make such a list. Reminds me of that old hymn I learned as a child--"Count your blessings, count them one by one. Count your blessings, see what God has done..."

Oops. I think I need to correct myself on those lyrics. I was humming the hymn as I did a little housework just now and the old memories of singing it came back clear as a bell. "count them one by one" should be "name them one by one.". I think this is much more effective, recognizing each and every one individually, just as the list in your post. So much better than a broad categorization of "blessings, yes i have many" to increase our awareness of all of God's gifts, large and small, special or ordinary, in our lives.

Such lovely words and such inspiration. A simple list could do wonders during this gloomy January when we tend to forget all of our amazing blessings.
