Snowdrop Lace Hat ~ Woman's Large

Below are modifications to the Snowdrop Lace Hat pattern for a woman's large. Since the lace makes the fabric so stretchy, I would recommend knitting up this size only if you really like a loose fitting hat.

Sample hat knit with Hand Maiden Casbah

on US#5 circular needles, switching to US#5 dpn’s.

Gauge: Approx. 23 stitches over 28 rows = 4” in unblocked stockinette, knit in the round on dpn’s for a women’s large hat.

Cast on 104 stitches
Work in rounds on circular needles.
Place marker at join and slip as you work your rounds.

Garter rim:
Rounds 1-9: knit odd rows and purl even rows with yarn in back on knit rounds and yarn in front on purl rounds.
Round 10: knit

Lace pattern in three staggered repeats:
Round 11: [yo, SK2P, yo, k5] repeat to the end of this round
Round 12: knit
Round 13: [yo, SK2P, yo, k5] repeat to the end of this round
Round 14: knit
Round 15: [k3, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo] repeat to the end of this round
Round 16: knit
Round 17: [yo, SK2P, yo, k1] repeat to the end of this round
Round 18: knit

Now you will stagger the lace pattern.

Remove marker, knit 4, replace marker and proceed:
Round 19: [yo, SK2P, yo, k5] repeat to the end of this round
Round 20: knit
Round 21: [yo, SK2P, yo, k5] repeat to the end of this round
Round 22: knit
Round 23: [k3, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo] repeat to the end of this round
Round 24: knit
Round 25: [yo, SK2P, yo, k1] repeat to the end of this round
Round 26: knit

Now you will stagger the lace pattern again.

Remove marker, knit 4, replace marker and proceed:
Round 27: [yo, SK2P, yo, k5] repeat to the end of this round

Round 30: knit

Stockinette finish:
Switch to dpn’s (double pointed needles.) Place markers (pm) on round 52 to indicate where to decrease. It’s a good idea to use markers colored differently from your join color to keep track of round completions.
Round 35-45: knit
Round 46: [k11, k2tog, pm] repeat to the end of this round
Rounds 47, 49, 51, 53, 55 knit these rounds
Round 48: [k10, k2tog] repeat to the end of this round
Round 50: [k9, k2tog] repeat…
Round 52: [k8, k2tog] repeat…
Round 54: [k7, k2tog] repeat…
Round 56: [k6, k2tog] = 56 stitches
Round 57: [k5, ssk] repeat…
Round 58: [k4, ssk] repeat…
Round 59: [k3, ssk] repeat…
Round 60: [k2, ssk] removing markers as you go
Round 61: [k1, ssk] repeat…
Round 62: ssk eight times
Round 63: ssk four times

Thread a blunt needle through remaining loops; secure wool on inside of hat; weave in ends. Block hat.

Abbreviations:
yo = increase by wrapping the yarn around the needle before making the next stitch
SK2P = slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit the next two stitches together, pass the slipped stitch over
k = knit
ssk = slip two stitches, one at a time, to the right needle as if to knit. Insert left needle tip into the front of the two stitches and knit them together.
k2tog = knit two stitches together

night snow

We came home last night to find the trees and shrubs covered with fresh white snow.
